In SE CA on border with Baja California; organized Aug 15, 1907 from San Diego County. Name Origin: For the Imperial Valley, itself named for the Imperial Land Company that was organized to colonize the southern Colorado Desert.

Area (sq mi): 4481.73 (land 4174.73; water 307.00). Pop per sq mi: 37.30.
Pop 2005: 155,823. State rank: 31. Pop change: 2000-20005 9.50%; 1990-2000 30.20%. Pop 2000: 142,361 (White 20.20%; Black or African American 4.00%; Hispanic or Latino 72.20%; Asian 2.00%; Other 44.70%). Foreign born: 32.20%. Median age: 31.00.
Income 2000: per capita $13,239; median household $31,870; Pop below poverty level: 22.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $17,752-$20,674.
