Nearly 40 years ago, when they were introducing the new 50p, my teacher said that decimalisation was coming and in the future we'd all be using litres, kilometres, hectares etc and there'd be no need for ounces, pounds and all the other confusing imperial units.
The news comes after The Journal earlier this year revealed moves to scrap imperial units by 2009 could be dropped in the wake of the metric martyrs' campaign, launched after the conviction of Sunderland greengrocer Steve Thoburn in 2001 for using scales that could not weigh in metric units.
Many of today's component datasheets only provide metric dimensions; Imperial units are starting to slowly fade away.
