Imre Révész

Révész, Imre 

(real name, Imre Csebray). Born Jan. 21, 1859, in Satoraljaújhely; died Sept. 23, 1945, in Sevliush, present-day Vinogradov, in Transcarpathian Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Hungarian painter, a representative of critical realism.

Révész studied at the Vienna Academy of Arts from 1875 to 1877 and from 1878 to 1880. He attended the School of Naturalistic Drawing in Budapest in 1877–78 and studied with M. Munkácsy in Paris from 1882 to 1884. Révész was a professor at the Budapest Academy of Arts from 1904 to 1921. He spent his last years in Transearpathia.

In his paintings, Révész faithfully depicted the characteristic features of the people and the essence of people’s lives. Some of his works expressed ideas of national liberation (for example, Petõfi on the Eve of the Battle, 1896; We Demand Bread!, 1899—both in the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest).
