Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park Location: Northeast of Stockton, 8 miles east of Jackson at 14881 Pine Grove-Volcano Road in Pine Grove. Facilities: 23 developed family campsites with showers and restrooms, 7 bark houses for primitive/environmental camping, picnic areas, hiking and nature trails, museums, historical features (é). Activities: Camping, interpretive programs, living history demonstrations, special events. Special Features: Park preserves a great outcropping of marbleized limestone with 1,185 mortar holes—the largest collection of bedrock mortars in North America—used many centuries ago by a Native American group now referred to as the Northern Sierra Miwok. The park includes the Chaw'se Regional Indian Museum, featuring an outstanding collection of Sierra Nevada Indian artifacts. Present-day descendents of the Miwok designed and helped reconstruct a typical Miwok village in the park, which includes bark houses, a ceremonial round house, acorn granaries, and shade ramadas.
