Indian National Trade Union Congress

Indian National Trade Union Congress

(IN-TUC), the largest trade union center in India. It was created in May 1947 under the direction of the Indian National Congress Party. Until the end of the 1960’s the leadership of the INTUC followed bourgeois conservative policies. Since the beginning of the 1970’s, under the influence of the political changes in the country (a schism within the Indian National Congress in 1969 and the assumption of power in some states by coalition governments of diverse political orientations) and of the departure in 1971 of the extreme right-wing leaders of the Gujarat branch and the Association of Textile Workers of Ahmadabad from the leadership of the center itself, the INTUC has undertaken a more progressive trade union policy. As of April 1974 it had a membership of more than 2 million. The INTUC is part of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions. [10—564-1]
