Altitude separation is effective when aircraft can safely remain above or below indirect-fire trajectories and above their effects. For this reason, without close coordination with combined arms units and aviation, without artillery support from indirect-fire positions (IFP), without an air cover provided by air defense assets and without protective field fortifications on the ground, ATR is unable not only to perform the assigned mission, but also to withdraw from combat to a new line of positions in the depth of defenses.
