It occupies most of Touraine Touraine , region and former province (until the French Revolution), W central France, centering around Tours (the historic capital) and drained by the Loire, Cher, and Vienne rivers. a department of W central France in the Centre region: contains many famous ch?teaux along the Loire. Capital: Tours. Pop.: 563 062 (2003 est.). Area: 6158 sq. km (2402 sq. miles)

Indre-et-Loire 

a department in France, in the middle course of the Loire River. Area, 6,200 sq km. Population, 479,000 (1975). The capital of the department is Tours. Industry employs 22 percent of the economically active population, while agriculture employs 21 percent (1968). Industry is concentrated in Tours, mainly machine building, chemical production, printing, and food processing. Eyeglasses are manufactured in Amboise, and an atomic power plant is located in Chinon. Agriculture includes wine growing and vegetable and fruit cultivation. On the plateaus, wheat, forage crops, and potatoes are grown. Livestock is also raised. The cháteaus of the Loire attract many tourists.
