Indulis Zarinš

Zariņš, Indulis Augustovich 

Born June 18, 1929, in Riga. Soviet painter. Corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1967); Honored Art Worker of the Latvian SSR (1965). Became a member of the CPSU in 1964.

Zariņš studied in Riga under E. Kalninš in the Academy of Arts of the Latvian SSR from 1952 to 1958. He began to teach there in 1962, becoming the prorector in 1967. In his historical-revolutionary and genre pictures, which are simple and strict in composition and romantic and courageous in spirit, Zariņš shows the character of the Soviet people. His work is distinguished by an inclination toward an expressiveness of dimension and a heightened emotionality of coloristic and rhythmic structure. His paintings include How High! (1958, Art Museum of the Latvian SSR in Riga), the triptych Soldiers of the Revolution (1962-65; including the central panel Speech, 1965; Tret’iakov Gallery; State Prize of the Latvian SSR, 1967), and Song (also known as Latvian Red Riflemen’, 1967; Tret’iakov Gallery).
