In 1983, NASA's Infrared Astronomy Satellite revealed that Arp 220 is one of the brightest of about a dozen galaxies that emit most of their light in the infrared.
Observations made in 1983 by the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) during its 10-month mission have helped astronomers map emissions of infrared radiation (heat) from distant interstellar and interplanetary dust clouds.
