| Responding both to the scholarly tendency to celebrate Durer primarily as a graphic artist, and to other technical studies that do not connect their conclusions to actual interpretations of works of art, Luber uses infrared reflectography and formal analysis to demonstrate the significance of Durer's appropriation of Venetian technique. Only in recent years have scientific studies using radiography, infrared reflectography, and the chemical analysis of pigments provided information about the material nature of Velazquez's paintings that could not earlier have been discerned through even the most careful observation. The results were included in the show, and ranged from infrared reflectography, xradiography, and dendrochronological evaluation. |
