(optics)
An instrument that converts an invisible infrared image into a visible image and enlarges this image, consisting of an infrared image converter tube, an objective lens for imaging the scene to be viewed onto the photocathode of the tube, and an ocular for viewing the phosphor screen of the tube.

JKCS041 was originally detected in 2006 in a survey from the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT).
The fascinating image is the result of combined data from Nasa's Chandra X-Ray observatory and infrared telescopes.
At 42m in diameter, the E-ELT, will be bigger than the Albert Hall - and not dissimilar in shape - making it the world's largest infrared telescope.
