The countermeasures system is designed to protect C-17s, C-130s, and other large aircraft from infrared-guided surface-to-air missile threats by automatically detecting a missile launch, determining if it is a threat, and activating a high-intensity directed laser beam countermeasure system to track and defeat the threat. The transaction also would make Lockheed the sole source of countermeasures against electro-optical and infrared-guided anti-aircraft missiles, as well as give it control of about 72 percent of the market for radio-frequency missile countermeasures, the Defense Department told the companies. The ALQ-144 system protects helicopters from infrared-guided missile threats. |
