Ingul

(also Velikii Ingul), a river in Kirovograd and Nikolaev Oblasts, Ukrainian SSR. It is 354 km long and drains an area of 9,890 sq km. The river originates in and flows for some distance through the Dnieper Upland. In its lower course it flows along the Black Sea Plain and divides into a number of channels. At the city of Nikolaev it flows into the Iuzhnyi Bug River. The Ingul is fed chiefly by rain and snow. The mean flow rate at the village of Novogorozheno (118 km from its mouth) is 8.84 cu m per sec. The river freezes in the first half of December, but the ice cover is unstable; the ice breaks up in late February or early March. Navigation is possible to a point 55 km from the mouth. The waters of the Ingul are used for irrigation. The city of Kirovograd is situated on the river.
