The capital (since 2003) is Magas, a new city in the suburbs of Nazran, the former capital. The attack, coming four days after the Kremlin said the head of Ingushetia was returning to his post despite still recovering from injuries sustained in a bomb attack in June, underscored growing fears over stability in the region. The reality, however, is that although there are militants in Ingushetia - they are part and parcel of the defeated insurgent movement in neighboring Chechnya (until 1991, the two formed one autonomous state) - it has other problems that are just as likely to be the cause of the violence, most notably corruption and organized crime. |
