integrated optics
(redirected from Integrated optical circuit)

Also found in: Acronyms, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
integrated optics
Combining electrical and optical components on the same silicon-based substrates used in the fabrication of a semiconductor chip. Also called "silicon photonics," fiber-optic communications employs numerous integrated optics devices, including lasers, photodetectors, beam splitters, isolators, filters, prisms, modulators and switches. See optoelectronic and photonic.
integrated optics [′in·tə‚grād·əd ′äp·tiks]
(optics)
A thin-film device containing tiny lenses, prisms, and switches to transmit very thin laser beams, and serving the same purposes as the manipulation of electrons in thin-film devices of integrated electronics.

The opening lengthy chapter reviews integrated optical circuits and devices for optical signal processing and sensing, and describes applications in microwave photonics, optical telecommunications, space engineering, biochemistry, and medicine.
It can cover the gap that separate silicon waveguides, which control the propagation of light beams on an integrated optical circuit.
Target application of the Near Field Holography (NFH) process is within the optical industry especially in the telecom industry, where the need for integrated optical circuits such as distributed feedback (DFB) lasers and other grating-based integrated components is growing rapidly.
