Intel-based system
(redirected from Intel-based CPU)

Also found in: Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
Intel-based system
A computer that uses a CPU from Intel, typically a Core or earlier Pentium chip. Also known as an "x86-based system." The x86 designation comes from the 8086 family of chips, which was used in the first PC and the ancestor of all that followed: 286, 386, 486, Pentium and Core.

Intel Only or x86 Only
When contrasting with other x86-based CPUs such as those made by AMD, Intel based indeed refers to chips made by Intel. When contrasting to the non-x86 world, such as Sun computers, IBM mainframes and earlier PowerPC-based Macintoshes, then an Intel-based system may erroneously refer to all x86-based machines. The correct reference in that case would be x86-based, not Intel-based. See x86, AMD and Mactel.
