Army Corps of Engineers decided recently to postpone study of the dam's vulnerability to earthquakes, so that the more immediate threat - a possible break in the dam due to internal erosion - can be fixed by the end of the year, project manager Mark Dasso said. Stopping the 64-year-old clay dam's internal erosion is now on a fast track. At the first of two public meetings, the agency explained to 100-plus people at Fern Ridge Middle School why the corps believes that internal erosion has put the dam at a high to very high risk of breaking in the next five years. |
