Mendis of the University of California, San Diego and his collaborators, high-speed electrons in the interplanetary magnetic field collide with atoms from the comet, causing the electrons to decelerate and emit X rays.
Like the earlier outburst, which researchers classify as a magnetic cloud, the blob of material ejected on April 7 forced the interplanetary magnetic field around it to point south, allowing it to dump energy efficiently into the oppositely oriented magne tic domain of Earth.
For 12 hours, it kept the interplanetary magnetic field near Earth pointing southward, the opposite direction of Earth's own field.
