commerce clauseIn the Constitution of the United States (Article I, section 8), the clause that authorizes Congress “To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with Indian Tribes.” It is the legal foundation of much of the U.S. government's regulatory authority. | It now interpreted the interstate commerce clause, whose wording had not changed since 1787, to mean that places of public accommodation could be regulated by Congressional action and be prohibited from discriminating. The Full Faith and Credit Clause has generally worked smoothly and quietly and has not received the same level of judicial attention as more controversial provisions of the Constitution, such as the interstate commerce clause, due process, equal protection, and the treaty-making power.
