On E border of CA, E of Fresno; organized Mar 22, 1866 from Tulare County. Name Origin: For the Inyo Mountains, from an Indian name said to mean 'where the great spirit dwells.'

Area (sq mi): 10226.98 (land 10203.10; water 23.88). Pop per sq mi: 1.80.
Pop 2005: 18,156. State rank: 52. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.20%; 1990-2000 -1.80%. Pop 2000: 17,945 (White 74.40%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 12.60%; Asian 0.90%; Other 18.80%). Foreign born: 7.60%. Median age: 42.80.
Income 2000: per capita $19,639; median household $35,006; Pop below poverty level: 12.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $24,270-$25,619.
