Iori

or Iora, a river in the Georgian and Azerbaijan SSR’s.

The Iori is 320 km long. Its basin has an area of 4,650 sq km. The river rises in the southern slopes of the Glavnyi, or Vodoraz-del’nyi, Range of the Greater Caucasus and empties into the Mingechaur Reservoir (formerly, into the Alazani River from the right). It flows through a canyon in its upper course and crosses the Samgori Basin in its middle course. The river is fed by snow and rain. The average annual rate of flow is 11.6 cu m per sec at the village of Salakhly (43 km from its mouth). This diminishes downstream, dropping to 9.82 cu m per sec at the village of Iusufly. After the construction of the Samgori irrigation system some of the Iori’s waters flowed through a canal to a reservoir located east of Tbilisi (the “Tbilisi Sea”).
