Iossa, Aleksandr

    0.01 sec.
Iossa, Aleksandr Andreevich

Born Dec. 19 (31), 1810; died Jan. 2 (14), 1894. Russian metallurgist.

Iossa graduated from the Cadet Mining Corps in St. Petersburg in 1829 and worked at factories in the Urals (in Kushva, Satka, Arti), where he introduced many technical improvements: the use of gas in puddling and welding furnaces, the use of hard coal in blast-furnace production, and the treatment of large iron shapes (in connection with manufacturing a metal frame for the spire of the cathedral in Peter and Paul Fortress, after a design by D. I. Zhuravskii). Iossa engaged in theoretical research on the puddling process. He was one of the first in Russia (1861–63) to experiment with the Bessemer process.
