(Hungarian, Ipoly), a river in Czechoslovakia; left tributary of the Danube. Length, 254 km. Basin area, approximately 5,200 sq km. It rises in the Slovak Ore Mountains and flows through the Lučenec and Ipel intermontane basins, primarily in a wide valley, and for a considerable distance along the border with Hungary. The average water discharge is approximately 25 cu m per sec. High water is in March. Logs can be floated on the river in the lower course.
