Ipoh (ē`pō), city (1991 pop. 468,765), capital of Perak state, Malaysia, central Malay Peninsula, in the Kinta River valley. A modern commercial town, it is a major tin-mining center. Nearby are rubber plantations and limestone quarries. The mine laborers and the population are mainly Chinese. The city has noted Chinese rock temples. IpohCity (pop., 2000 prelim.: 566,211), West (Peninsular) Malaysia. Its name comes from a local tree, whose poisonous resin was once used by indigenous people for hunting. The modern city dates from the 1890s, when British tin-mining companies were set up. Immigrant Chinese were brought in to work the tin deposits, and their descendants now dominate the city.
