Krasheninnikov, Ippolit Mikhailovich
Born Sept. 19 (Oct. 1), 1884, in Cheliabinsk; died Oct. 27, 1947, in Leningrad. Soviet botanist and geographer. Doctor of biological sciences (1934); professor (1939). Honored Scientific Worker of the RSFSR (1947). In 1914, Krasheninnikov graduated from Moscow University and in the same year began working in the St. Petersburg Botanical Gardens. He subsequently worked in the Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He studied the vegetation of the Urals, Kazakhstan, Ciscaucasia, Western Siberia, Transbaikalia, and the Mongolian People’s Republic. He devoted particular attention to study of the vegetation of the foreststeppe, steppe, and desert zones in connection with the history of their landscapes. He is the author of a number of works on the taxonomy and phylogeny of Artemisia and other genera of the Compositae family. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
