Irapuato

Irapuato (ēräpwä`tō), city (1990 pop. 265,042), Guanajuato state, W central Mexico, on the Irapuato River. It is the commercial and communications center of the surrounding mining and agricultural (cereals and cattle) region. The fruits and flowers of Irapuato's luxurious gardens are famous throughout Mexico.
Irapuato 

a city in Mexico, in the state of Guanajuato; located in the southern part of the Meseta Central Plateau in the basin of the Lerma River. Population, 176,000 (1970). Railroad and highway junction.

Irapuato processes the agricultural produce of the El Bajio region. The city produces food (three-fourths of the value of its industrial production), textiles, leather footwear, and chemicals.

Juan Pablo Martinez Soriano, a researcher at the Centro de Investigacion y Estudios Avanzados (CINVESTAV) in Irapuato, Guanajuato state, said there is no evidence that genetically modified agricultural products have caused any harm to the health of individuals or to the environment.
