Irbe Strait 

a strait linking the Gulf of Riga with the Baltic Sea; situated between the mainland and the southern extremity of the island of Saaremaa. Length, 65 km; width, 33 km at its narrowest point (the western entrance); prevailing depths, 10–20 m, exceeding 20 m in the northern part. The strait freezes over in a cold winter.
