In west-central NC, north of Charlotte; organized Nov 3, 1788 (prior to statehood) from Rowan County. Name Origin: For James Iredell (1751-99), NC attorney general (1779), delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1788, and associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1790-99).

Area (sq mi): 597.01 (land 575.57; water 21.44). Pop per sq mi: 244.80.
Pop 2005: 140,924. State rank: 17. Pop change: 2000-20005 14.90%; 1990-2000 32.00%. Pop 2000: 122,660 (White 80.70%; Black or African American 13.70%; Hispanic or Latino 3.40%; Asian 1.30%; Other 2.90%). Foreign born: 3.60%. Median age: 36.50.
Income 2000: per capita $21,148; median household $41,920; Pop below poverty level: 8.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $26,911-$27,137.
Unemployment 2004: 5.40%. Change from 2000: -0.30%. Median travel time to work: 24.50 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 30.60%.
