International Refugee Organization (IRO)

Temporary specialized agency of the United Nations system (1946–52). The IRO assisted refugees and displaced persons in Europe and Asia who could not or would not return home after World War II. Taking over the work of its principal predecessor, the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, it also assumed responsibility for the legal protection and resettlement of refugees previously carried out by the Intergovernmental Committee on Refugees. It was succeeded by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Iro

(or Ero-Gol), a river in the People’s Republic of Mongolia; a right-bank tributary of the Orkhon (Selenga Basin) and its largest tributary. Length, 323 km. Basin area, approximately 12,000 sq km. It rises in the Khentei Mountains. In its upper course it flows through a narrow, wooded valley; in the Iro’s lower course the valley widens, and the river divides into branches. Owing to the rain there are freshets in the summer, during which the Iro carries large quantities of suspended sediments. From November through April it is icebound. The river is used for floating timber.
