An outstanding reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, the New York Sun, and McClure's Magazine (1901–07), he won renown for his knowledgeable coverage of the San Francisco earthquake (1906). Later a World War I correspondent for the Saturday Evening Post, he also wrote fiction, biography, and other works. |
