Isherwood, Benjamin (Franklin) (1822–1915) naval officer, engineer; born in New York City. He entered the naval engineer corps in 1844 and became the chief engineer in 1848. His observations and experiments led to his Experimental Researches in Steam Engineering (1863, 1865) which became a standard text. As chief of the Bureau of Steam Engineering (1862–70) he facilitated the growth of the steam navy. How to thank TFD for its existence?
