Ishim, city, Russia

Ishim (ēshēm`), city (1989 pop. 66,000), W Siberian Russia, on the Ishim River and the Trans-Siberian RR. An agricultural center, it produces farm machinery and processes food. An old trading town known as Korkinsk, Ishim was renamed in 1782.

Ishim, river, c.1,130 mi (1,819 km) long, W Siberian Russia and Kazakhstan. It rises N of Qaraghandy in Kazakhstan (where it is known as the Esil), flows W past Atbasar, N past Petropavl, and then joins the Irtysh River at Ust Ishim.
