In northwestern WA, bounded on the north by Deception Pass, on the east by Skagit Bay, on the south by Admiralty Inlet, and on the west by the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Organized Jan 6, 1853 (prior to statehood) from either King County or Thurston County. Name Origin: So named because the county is wholly composed of islands.

Area (sq mi): 517.39 (land 208.43; water 308.95). Pop per sq mi: 380.20.
Pop 2005: 79,252. State rank: 14. Pop change: 2000-20005 10.80%; 1990-2000 18.90%. Pop 2000: 71,558 (White 85.10%; Black or African American 2.40%; Hispanic or Latino 4.00%; Asian 4.20%; Other 6.20%). Foreign born: 6.40%. Median age: 37.00.
Income 2000: per capita $21,472; median household $45,513; Pop below poverty level: 7.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $26,567-$28,278.
Unemployment 2004: 6.60%. Change from 2000: 1.90%. Median travel time to work: 28.80 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 32.10%.

    PACE EH is a community-based process that engages citizens in local environmental health issues, and Island County is one of several communities nationwide that have successfully implemented PACE EH (National Association of County and City Health Officials [NACCHO], 2002).
    Beginning in March 2003, five new drop-off sites hosted by the communities of East Moline, Moline and Rock Island and administered by the Rock Island County Waste Management Agency (RICWMA) will be available to county residents.
    The toolkit lists the tasks involved in identifying environmental health issues of importance to a local community It also includes an asset map of Island County institutions, social structures, and organizations, which may be a useful model for readers who want to create asset maps for their own jurisdictions.
