In southeastern VA, on the west bank of the James River. Organized 1634 as Warrascoyak County from Upper Norfolk (which was organized 1636 from New Norfolk County and renamed Nansemond County in 1642-43); name changed in 1637. Name Origin: For the island off the southern coast of England. Originally named for the local Indians.
