In north-central MN, west of Hibbing; original county; established Oct 27, 1850 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For Itasca Lake; name coined by explorer and ethnologist Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864), who thought the lake was the "true source" of the Mississippi River. From Latin: the last part of veritas 'truth' and first part of caput 'head.'

Area (sq mi): 2927.78 (land 2665.06; water 262.72). Pop per sq mi: 16.70.
Pop 2005: 44,384. State rank: 21. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.90%; 1990-2000 7.70%. Pop 2000: 43,992 (White 94.30%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 0.60%; Asian 0.30%; Other 4.90%). Foreign born: 1.30%. Median age: 41.10.
Income 2000: per capita $17,717; median household $36,234; Pop below poverty level: 10.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,204-$24,048.
Unemployment 2004: 7.30%. Change from 2000: 0.20%. Median travel time to work: 22.00 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 15.60%.
