Zal’kind, Iulii Sigizmundovich
Born Dec. 1 (13), 1875, in Vilnius; died Nov. 23, 1948, in Leningrad. Soviet organic chemist. Honored Worker in Science and Technology of the RSFSR (1947). A student of A. E. Favorskii, Zal’kind graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1898. In 1903 he lectured on the chemistry of aromatic hydrocarbons at the St. Petersburg Institute of Technology. In 1930 he became a professor and in 1934 head of the department of organic chemistry at the Leningrad Institute of Technology. Zal’kind investigated the catalytic hydrogenation of acetylene derivatives and did re-search on unsaturated compounds very similar to vitamin A. A number of his works were devoted to the study of aromatic polynuclear compounds; he was the first to obtain iodophenanthrene (1927). Zal’kind was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
