Dombrovskaia, Iuliia Fominichna
Born Nov. 29 (Dec. 11), 1891, in Elets. Soviet pediatrician; academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1953). Dombrovskaia graduated from the St. Petersburg Women’s Medical Institute in 1913. She became a professor (1936) and chairwoman of the subdepartment of pediatric diseases (1951) of the I. M. Sechenov First Moscow Medical Institute. Her work has dealt chiefly with the clinical aspects and treatment of pneumonia, infectious and allergic diseases, and functional disorders and the role of vitamins in the physiology and pathology of children. A new school of thought in pediatrics has grown up around Dombrovskaia. She is the chairwoman of the presidiums of the All-Union and Moscow societies of pediatricians and an honorary member of the Bulgarian Society of Pediatricians and the J. Purkinje Czechoslovakian Medical Society. She has been awarded the Lenin Prize (1970), three Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
