Lermontova, Iuliia Vsevolodovna 

Born Dec. 21, 1846 (Jan. 2, 1847), in St. Petersburg; died December 1919, in Petrograd. One of the first Russian women chemists. Daughter of M. Iu. Lermontov’s second cousin.

Lermontova graduated from the University of Göttingen in 1874 and worked with V. V. Markovnikov in Moscow and A. M. Butlerov in St. Petersburg. She was the first to study the alkylation of olefins by halogen derivatives (1878). Lermontova was the first to obtain 1,3-dibromobutane and dimethylacetylene and to demonstrate the structure of 4,4-diaminohydrazobenzene. At the suggestion of D. I. Mendeleev, she conducted research on the separation of platinum metals.
