Zhadovskaia, Iuliia Valerianovna

Born June 29 (July 11), 1824, in the village of Subbotino in laroslavl’ Province; died July 28 (Aug. 9), 1883, in the village of Tolstikovo in Kostroma Province. Russian writer. Born into a noble family.

Zhadovskaia’s best work is her love and nature lyric poetry. N. A. Nekrasov’s poetry influenced her work of the late 1840’s and the 1850’s. Zhadovskaia’s lyric poetry is in the folksong tradition. Some of her poems became popular songs (“Cornfield, My Cornfield, My Golden Cornfield”), set to music by M. I. Glinka and A. S. Dargomyzhskii. Her novel Aloof From the Social Whirl (1857) and her stories are devoted to the problems of love, marriage, and the emancipation of women. A raznochinets (intellectual of no definite class) appears in Zhadovskaia’s story The Backward Girl (1861).
