Iurii Vlasov

Vlasov, Iurii Petrovich 

Born Dec. 5, 1935, in Makeevka. Soviet weight lifter; Honored Master of Sport of the USSR (1959). Member of the CPSU since 1960.

Vlasov graduated from the N. E. Zhukovskii Air Force Engineering Academy in 1959. He was a five-time champion of the USSR, world champion in 1959 and 1961-63, and champion at the 17th Olympic Games (1960, Rome) in the heavyweight category. Vlasov holds 28 world records. His highest accomplishments are 580 kg in combined, 199 kg in the press, 172.5 kg in the snatch, and 215.5 kg in the clean and jerk. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Badge of Honor, and medals.
