Iurovskaia, Rimma Iakovlevna 

Born Sept. 27, 1898, in Feodosiia; died Sept. 6, 1980. One of the organizers of the Communist youth movement in the USSR. Member of the CPSU since April 1917.

The daughter of a worker, Iurovskaia enrolled in the Gymnasium in Ekaterinburg (now Sverdlovsk) in 1915. In April 1917 she became chairman of the youth organization of the Ekaterinburg committee of the RSDLP, and in August, chairman of the “Third International” Socialist League of Worker Youth. Iurovskaia took part in the struggle for Soviet power in Ekaterinburg in October 1917. In 1918 and 1919 she served as chairman of the Ural’sk oblast committee of the Leagues of Worker Youth and the Russian Communist League of Youth (Komsomol). She took part in the Civil War of 1918–20.

In 1918, Iurovskaia was chosen a delegate to the First Congress of the Komsomol, at which she was elected a member of the organization’s Central Committee. In 1919 and 1920 she served as chairman of the Viatka and Ekaterinburg provincial committees of the Komsomol and secretary of the Central Committee. In 1920 and 1921 she was secretary of the Southeast Bureau of the Central Committee of the Komsomol in Rostov-on-Don. From 1922 to 1924 she studied at the Ia. M. Sverdlov Communist University, and thereafter she engaged in party and economic work.

Iurovskaia became a personal pensioner in 1956. She was a delegate to the Second, Third, Fourteenth, Sixteenth, and Seventeenth Congresses of the Komsomol and to the Ninth Congress of the RCP(B). Iurovskaia has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, and various medals.
