Oding, Ivan Avgustovich 

Born June 24 (July 6), 1896, in Riga; died May 7, 1964, in Moscow. Soviet scientist and metallurgist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946). Member of the CPSU from 1942.

Oding graduated from the department of mechanics of the Petrograd Technological Institute in 1921. From 1930 to 1942 he was a professor at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute. From 1942 to 1947 he was director of the Central Scientific Research Institute of Technology and Machine Building, and from 1947 to 1953 deputy director of the Institute of Machine Science of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1947 he also became deputy academician-secretary of the division of technical sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1953 he became a laboratory head, and in 1955 deputy director, of the Institute of Metallurgy of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Oding’s main works dealt with the strength of metals and with methods of testing the mechanical properties of metals. He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1946), two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Badge of Honor, and medals.
