Emel’ianov, Ivan Iakovlevich 

Born June 24 (July 7), 1913, in the village of Prokhorovo, Nelidovo Raion, in what is now Kalinin Oblast. Soviet specialist in nuclear power engineering. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1974). Member of the CPSU since 1949.

Emel’ianov graduated from the Moscow Institute of Communication Engineering in 1940. He fought in the Great Patriotic War of 1941—45. Beginning in 1946, he directed research in advanced problems of nuclear power engineering at a scientific research institute.

Emel’ianov’s main works deal with the kinetics of nuclear reactors and with integrated automatic control systems for nuclear reactors. Emel’ianov helped design and build the world’s first atomic power plant—the Obninsk Atomic Power Plant—as well as, for example, the Siberian, Beloiarsk, and Leningrad atomic power plants.

Emel’ianov received the Lenin Prize and three State Prizes of the USSR. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, and three other orders, as well as various medals.
