Ivan Tiurin

Tiurin, Ivan Vladimirovich 

Born Oct. 21 (Nov. 2), 1892, in Menzelinsk, in what is now the Tatar ASSR; died July 12, 1962, in Moscow. Soviet soil scientist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953; corresponding member, 1946).

In 1919, Tiurin graduated from the Petrovskoe Agricultural Academy (now the K. A. Timiriazev Moscow Agricultural Academy). From 1919 to 1930 he worked at the University of Kazan and the Kazan Institute of Agriculture and Forestry, becoming a professor in 1928. From 1930 to 1941 and from 1944 to 1951 he was a professor at the Leningrad Academy of Timber Technology, and from 1944 to 1952 at Leningrad University. At this time he also worked at the Soil Institute, where he was director from 1949 to 1962.

Tiurin’s main works dealt with the problem of increasing soil fertility and with research on soil humus. Tiurin was an Academician of the Polish Academy (1956) and the Academy of Sciences of the German Democratic Republic (1957). He was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and several medals.
