Vorob’ev, Ivan Alekseevich
Bora Aug. 26, 1921, in the village of Gorbachevo, Odoev Raion, Tula Oblast. Twice Hero of the Soviet Union (Aug. 19, 1944, and June 29, 1945), colonel (1956). Became a CPSU member in 1944. Born into the family of a peasant. Vorob’ev has been in the Soviet Army since 1940; he graduated from the Tambov Military Aviation School for Pilots in 1941 and from the Red Banner Air Force Academy in 1952. During the Great Patriotic War he advanced between August 1942 and May 1945 from pilot to squadron commander of the 76th Guards Storm Regiment and flew about 400 missions (over Stalingrad, Sevastopol’, Byelorussia, and East Prussia). After the war he held commander’s posts and has been an instructor since 1958. Vorob’ev has been awarded the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, Orders of the Patriotic War First and Second Class, the Order of Alexander Nevsky, two Orders of the Red Star, and medals.
