Vostokov, Ivan Anatol’evich

Born Jan. 4 (16), 1840, in Yaroslavl; died Jan. 21 (Feb. 2), 1898. Russian astronomer and specialist in celestial mechanics.

From 1863 to 1865, Vostokov was an astronomer at the Pulkovo Observatory. In 1869 he became director of the Warsaw Observatory, which he redesigned and expanded (he installed a meridian circle for systematic work in astrometry). Vostokov perfected the method of determining the orbit of a celestial body proposed by J. Lagrange, making it suitable for practical computations.
