Zamotin, Ivan Ivanovich 

Born Oct. 20 (Nov. 1), 1873, in the village of Kryulina, in present-day Bezhetsk Raion, Kalinin Oblast; died May 25, 1942, in Minsk. Soviet literary critic; academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR(1928).

Zamotin graduated from the St. Petersburg Institute of History and Philology in 1897 and became a professor at the Byelorussian University in 1922. He was the author of the studies The Early Romantic Trends in Russian Literature (1900), M. Iu. Lermontov (1914), At the Turning Point: The Scheme of Literary Quests of the 19th and 20th Centuries (1927), A.S. Pushkin: A Sketch of His Life and Works (1937, in Byelorussian), and works devoted to Russian and Byelorussian writers. He also dealt with problems of the methods of teaching literature (Belles Lettres in School Teaching, issues 1–2, 1927–28, in Byelorussian).
