Ivan Zamychkovskii

Zamychkovskii, Ivan Eduardovich 

Born Jan. 8, 1869, in Kiev; died there July 15, 1931. Soviet Ukrainian actor. Honored Artist of the USSR (1926).

Zamychkovskii began his stage career in 1887 at the I. la. Setov Theater of Russian Operetta in Kiev. He performed with various Ukrainian theater troupes until 1917, acted at the T. Shevchenko Theater (now in Dnepropetrovsk) during 1919–25, and at the October Revolution Theater in Odessa during 1925–31. His best roles were Martyn Borulia in Martyn Borulia by Karpenko-Karyi, Mikita in A Loose Heart Will Give You Trouble by Kropivnitskii, the Mayor in The Inspector-General by Gogol, and Romashka in Dictatorship by Mikitenko. Zamychkovskii developed the realistic traditions of the democratic national theater and made an important contribution to Soviet Ukrainian cinema (his debut was in 1926). His film roles include Shchepkin in Taras Shevchenko (1926) and Anton in Two Days (1927).
