Ivanov, Aleksandr Fedorovich 

Born Dec. 12 (24), 1867, in Rostov-on-Don; died Jan. 8, 1935, in Moscow. Soviet otolaryngologist. Honored Scientific Worker of the RSFSR (1934).

Ivanov graduated from Moscow University with a degree in physics and mathematics (1890) and a degree in medicine (1893). From 1911 he was professor at the Advanced Courses for Women. He was the organizer of the first congress of otolaryngologists in Russia (1908). In 1914 he became a professor of otolaryngology at Moscow University (from 1930, at the First Moscow Medical Institute). Ivanov was one of the founders of otolaryngology in the USSR as an independent branch of medical science. His principal works were devoted to the histology, anatomy, and treatment of diseases of the ear, throat, and nose, as well as chronic stenosis of the larynx. He perfected and simplified the methodology of many operations, including laryngos-tomy. He founded a large school of otolaryngologists.
