Ivchenko, Aleksandr Georgievich 

Born Nov. 10 (23), 1903, in Tokmak, in present-day Zaporozh’e Oblast; died June 30, 1968, in Zaporozh’e. Soviet aircraft designer, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1964), Hero of Socialist Labor (1963). Became a member of the CPSU in 1924.

Ivchenko graduated from the Kharkov Mechanics and Machine-Building Institute in 1935. He designed the piston, turbojet, and turbo-propeller engines used on many airplanes and helicopters. A recipient of the State Prize of the USSR in 1948 and of the Lenin Prize in 1960, Ivchenko was awarded two Orders of Lenin, four other orders, and medals.
