Ivchenko, Aleksandr Georgievich
Born Nov. 10 (23), 1903, in Tokmak, in present-day Zaporozh’e Oblast; died June 30, 1968, in Zaporozh’e. Soviet aircraft designer, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1964), Hero of Socialist Labor (1963). Became a member of the CPSU in 1924. Ivchenko graduated from the Kharkov Mechanics and Machine-Building Institute in 1935. He designed the piston, turbojet, and turbo-propeller engines used on many airplanes and helicopters. A recipient of the State Prize of the USSR in 1948 and of the Lenin Prize in 1960, Ivchenko was awarded two Orders of Lenin, four other orders, and medals. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
